Crockpot English Apple Cider

Wassail is an English Apple Cider that was drunk to guarantee a good apple harvest the following year. More importantly, it is delicious!  I drink way too many cups of the stuff during the holiday season. We always made it on the stove, but with an infant and a busy schedule, I found myself pressed for time this fall, so I attempted it in the crockpot. So easy and it tastes just as delicious! It also doesn't hurt that it makes your house smell AMAZING!

I love it so much, I am sharing the family recipe (with a few slight changes) with all of you!

 4 qts apple cider
1 heaping tsp whole allspice
1 heaping tsp whole nutmeg
1 heaping tsp whole cloves
4 cinnamon sticks
1 can orange juice concentrate (thawed)
1/3 cup brown sugar

Pour two quarts apple cider into crockpot.

Add all the spices.

Let cook on high for 1 hour. Strain (or strain after second hour for a stronger, spicier taste).

Add two more quarts apple cider, orange juice concentrate, and brown sugar.

Cook another hour.

Enjoy and toast to next year's apple harvest!

I live in California where I enjoy the sunshine as much as possible while working hard to make our 816 square foot house a joyful home for the family that God has blessed me with. For as long as I can remember my family has had Wassail (pronounced Wassle) during Thanksgiving celebrations.

  1. There's a similar, and equally quaffable, mix using similar flavouring agents, but substituting red wine, instead of cider. Ski afficionados will know it as "Gluewein", and to give it an extra warming trend (kick?) you add some Brandy to the ingredients. Have never had an exact recipe - it's more instinctive in my case, but believe me on a cold winter's morning, especially around Christmas time, it's a great comforting drink (in small quantities, of course!)

  2. This looks like it's absolutely delicious and I will try it... the 'English' apple cider name is a bit of a misnomer though, we don't have apple cider like this in the England /at all/. In England, cider is an icy, chilled alcoholic drink... much like larger but sweeter. (It is of course made from apples, which I'm sure is where the similarity comes).
