Being in the Moment and Taking Pictures

Some of the best advice was given to me by my mother-in-law, while I was pregnant with my son. I was browsing through my husbands baby pictures, many of which were pictures of him doing something mischievous with his brothers. A mud covered bathroom, food splattered clothes, and all other kinds of goodness was captured in his childhood. I asked my mother-in-law how she didn't just go bananas everyday. Her simple reply was "I took pictures". She told me she would take pictures, since then she would be less angry when it came to discipline time. Capturing the memory was a way of counting to ten before teaching her children between right and wrong. I have clung to this advice throughout the past 8 1/2 years of my mommy-hood. When my children raided our food storage and had a juice party in their bedroom, I took a picture. When my son decided to play with his #2 in his diaper, I took a picture. When my daughter would rub deodorant all over her belly as a toddler, I took a picture. All of these moments I may have forgotten had I not stopped to capture it. Putting aside my frustration, tears, and anger, that all Moms face on a daily bases, helped me to be in the moment with my children. They are only little once and I desperately don't want to miss a moment. So when I make my bed, look back to admire it, and in rushes two kids to jump, bounce, and rough up the bed....I take a picture:)

How many pictures have you taken today?

XO Danielle

  1. this is so great! i have four littles and i do take a tonne of pictures- often snapping sad (or mad) faces before i decide what to do about them. i never thought of it as a way to "count to ten" but really that's so true! just this morning actually, i found my 14 month old playing in an (unflushed) toilet. she was soaking wet, as was the bathroom floor, which had actually just been washed (a super rare event!). i didn't get too upset, but after i cleaned it up i thought, now why didn't i take a picture of that! (if the toilet water had been clean, i guarantee i would have!)
love this post, and i will continue to take many, many pictures, every day!

  2. And sometimes people take videos and win money on America's Funniest Home Video show! (AFV) I find that show to be delightfully entertaining. Pictures are a great idea....I see, from your mother-in-law, how they can bring humor into an other-wise frustrating mom moment!

  3. What a wonderful mindset to take about kids! :) I love that! I'm just about to have my first, so I think that this is something I'll need to remember. Because, really, aren't those moments where you could've gotten mad and yelled now some pretty hilarious memories of your family? ;)

  4. That's great advice. Not that I don't take a million pictures anyway.

  5. Love this! I am going to try this.

  6. Can I take a picture of my boyfriend eating 9 chocolate chip cookies instead of dinner? :)

  7. This is a great post, and a great idea! I try to take pictures of my daughter in the midst of her shenanigans but she always stops when she sees the camera, ha ha. So far she hasn't done anything to severely test my patience - she is 1.5 years and already well into toddlerhood, but so far we have lucked out on excellent behavior... maybe because she is, for now, still an only child with round the clock supervision and attention? (that will all change when baby sister arrives in June!!) - but I will certainly keep this technique in mind for when those days inevitably come. Plus, candid shots of naughty children are always so much more entertaining than poses!

  8. Great idea! I love the reminder to make sure we end up in the pictures, too. Tough when I'd much rather be behind the camera!
I found you via foxnews, I believe. It's so fun to find other like-minded DIY Moms! I started discovering all we can make for ourselves about five years ago and it's changed our lives as well.
I look forward to reading more.

  9. I really needed to read this breath of freah air today! I have an 9 year old and a 5 month old.... OMG what a difference between my kids! This was a blessing to read!

  10. I totally agree and love to take pictures of my boys and our pets! LOL! I actually think I drive them all crazy but just think of all the wonderful memories I will be able to show them and their families one day. Catch what you can because it sure goes by quick!

  11. Great advice! I am still a new mom so I am taking pictures all the time..and video ;)
