Camping is always fun with the kids.
ReplyDeleteGoing horseback riding, hiking at the forest preserves or at a state park, and free summer festivals that play music, to name some of the activities that I've taken my kids.
For extra hot days do an indoor picnic with the windows open. All the great fresh air and breezes without having to fuss over sunscreen or worry about next day sunburns.
ReplyDeleteI found this website and thought it had some great ideas!! http://www.wired.com/geekmom/2012/06/outdoor-summer-fun/
ReplyDeletelove your blog!!

I've seen some PVC pipe sprinklers on Pinterest and I totally want to build one this summer!
ReplyDeleteI also signed the kids up for http://www.kidsbowlfree.com - they can bowl two free games a day all summer. Seems like a bit of a scam to sell family passes, but I didn't go for it and figured we have the option for free bowling if we want.
I also need to check the county because I know we have a lot of activities going on at the local parks in the summer.
Good luck with your list!

We did the PVC pipe bike wash last year, and it's a hit!! Just a few dollars and it bought countless hours of fun and memories. :)
DeleteSo the bowling isn't a scam and it's a good deal if you guys will go since the $35 family pass covers 4 adults BUT the catch is that the shoes still have to be rented which can be pricey - we had to pay $18 for 4 shoes last time we went - I just found shoes for both of my kids from craigslist for $10/pair.
DeleteThanks Stella! I'm so excited to try it!
DeleteStephanie, thanks for the info. What a great idea to find shoes too!

I'm checking off all the pins for my state from roadsideamerica.com, there's all sort of quirky museums, random statues, and fun attractions that you don't normally find in guidebooks.
ReplyDeleteWE made up a list just last week, this is our list of 100, we have 4 kids.

I dont have kids, but I do work with little ones each and every day :) During summer time I will tell you that all the kids LOVE having a "car wash" day. We got a little fancy and found an old hose, poked some holes in it and attached it over a plastic arc...so the kids could "go through" the car wash--one year we added plastic blue strips of plastic so it was like the swishy washers in a rel car wash. The best partt-shaving cream!! give them sponges, shaving cream and a bucket of water and they will be entertained for hours. We have our kids wash bikes, toy cars, boogie boards, etc. Of course, you may need to change the amoutn of water being used depending on availablitiy and any water bans, but it is great fun!

ReplyDeleteCheck out the programming at your public library. Lots of times they have additional activities, story times, or special events during the summer - and usually they are free! I'm equidistant from three libraries and could fill every day in the summer with a free activity from one or the other.
ReplyDeleteMany museums have a free visit time. The Children's Museum in my hometown does free admission 5-7 one night per week all year long. Hard to do in the school year, but great in the summer.
Concerts in the park. Many community bands will have free concerts outdoors in the summer.
Explore a different park than the one you usually go to.
Make garden stones with that homemade cement- the kids can make hand and foot prints and then add their names to it too!
ReplyDeleteMake homemade play dough that doesn't have any chemicals in it- tons of recipes online.
Do a dressup time photoshoot with your kids. Dress them in fun outfits and let them pose for you.
I hope that some of these help! Good luck!

SLIPPIN SLIDE!
ReplyDeleteIce Eggs...a summer must.

I live in Henderson as well and the Cinemark Theater on Boulder Hwy is doing a summer special. For $5 you get 10 movies (every Wednesday at 10am). The movies aren't the newest, but for 50 cents the kids get a chance to go to the theater and get out of the heat.
ReplyDeleteA simple spin on the board game SORRY - buy a bag or two of Hershey's Kissables. You know, they're the candy-coated mini kisses that Hershey came out with about ten years ago? Use these instead of the pieces. When someone "sorrys" another player, they get to eat the player's piece they just Sorry-ied!
ReplyDeleteIt becomes a really fun game of both strategy and survival. The person with the most pieces in their home by the end of the game wins!
I'm all crazy about the service projects this summer. We are going to gather old shoes for Nike (www.nikereuseashoe.com), have a lemonade stand (alexslemonadestand.com), gather DVDs for children's hospitals (kidflicks.org), make cards for a nursing home, make treats for the firefighters, make craft kids for cancer patients at Sunrise Children's hospital, make a blanket for sick children (projectlinus.org), pick up trash at the park, send the troops a care package (anysoldier.com), hand out cold water bottles to the homeless, donate food to 3-square, and donating clothes and toys to D.I. We are excited!
ReplyDeletedens indoors and out, water play of any sort, set them the challenge of learning a new skill before they go back to school with the proviso there will be limited parental input, could be something as simple as learning to walk on 'flower pot' stilts. Anona
ReplyDeleteThis one's for a rainy day...... from a soon to be grandmother! Did it when the kids were small. Turned the living room in to a tent for the day, using chairs, sheets and blankets. Read stories in the 'dark', made smores, did a hike through the house.
ReplyDeleteWe are playing badminton with them and we always do smores in the summertime. We also do nerf wars, or water gun wars on really hot days and we allow them to run through the sprinklers too. They love that. Another thing I really like to do with them is make our own ice cream with ziplock bags. My babes love that. We also go to the park more and do hikes or play basketball. Its a lot of fun and completely free!!! :)

ReplyDeleteLast year I collected a few plastic toys from the fastfood places and friends put them in a bowl with water and froze it. My then 2 year old had a blast watching it melt and getting the toys out. Perfect for the really hot days. You can put it out in the sun and they can keep an eye on it :)
ReplyDeleteFor road trip fun you can make a lap chalkboard (also can be used for fun magnet play and easy meal serving on road trips)

If you live near Cobb Theaters, they have Free Summer Kids Shows. Two different movies per week Tuesday through Thursday, and it's free for the whole family. The movies are usually a couple of years old. This year some of the movies we'll get to see: Hotel Transylvania, Pirates Band of Misfits, and Rise of the Guardians which I haven't seen yet. I like that we'll see them for free :-)
ReplyDeleteMake home made ice cream!
ReplyDeleteWe are planning on making our own bubbles, hula hooping, touring a cheese factory, U-pick farm/fresh veggies and hopefully much much more! :)
ReplyDeleteOops, I forgot to mention, we are also cooking out and camping out in the back yard.
ReplyDeleteGreat Ideas: My boys are 7 and 12 so I really try and find a good medium...Some of these are Farmers Markets, Obstacle Courses in the yard, and a surprise Ice Cream Sundaes for dinner! Last year I cheated a bit and gave them a lunch size late afternoon "snack" before we had the sundates for dinner!
ReplyDeleteWe found a site called atlasquest.com. It introduces you to something called letterboxing. It's like doing a treasure hunt. You find ones in your area & use the maps, riddles or directions provided to find it. It's fun & FREE. We've done several & I know friends that have done them while vacationing as well to add more fun.
ReplyDeleteSolar oven and cook in it of course, build sun dial, waterwheel, catch fireflies, berry picking, tie-dye t shirts, collect rocks and use for a couple of art projects, make sun flower garden. Hope that helps. Love your blog. Thanks for all u share.
