Welcome to Creating a Beautiful Life on Less, a special home tour series

I am so excited to get this series up and going on the blog. It was been in the works for quite sometime. It was an idea I had one night, which I thought on for some time. Then last month I posted this idea on the B and D Facebook page and was overwhelmed with all the response. I now have tours booked until September. I am so blessed to have such amazing friends and readers. Thank you for allowing my dream of Creating a Beautiful Life on Less come to life. You are all amazing and I am thankful everyday for you.

Today we have our very first home tour. It is by Megan H. She is a super cute mama to three, almost four. She has a gorgeous home, for which she has decorated on a budget. She is here to share her tips and tricks for creating beautiful on less.

Let's get to it...
-----------------------------
Hello Everyone! Today, Danielle, has asked me to share with all of you some of my tips and tricks for decorating on a budget. First, let me introduce myself a little. My name is Megan Hedrick and I am a stay at home mother of 3, soon to be 4. I love exercising, ice cream after I exercise, going on vacation, spending time with good friends and interior design. I have a slight obsession with decorating my house and change it all the time. As we all know, décor can be expensive. Lucky for us we live in a world full of blogs, Instagram, Facebook, and Pinterest where we are able to find “diy” ideas and “knock-offs”. I love to “do it myself” and actually kid with my husband that I’m a better handyman than he is. For the next few minutes, I’m going to walk you through my home and show you some of my “knock-offs” and give you a few of my favorite decorating tips. Come on!

First, we will start with my entryway. You want your entryway to be inviting, it’s the first thing people see when they enter your home so make an impression. I love this quote and actually saw it first at Hobby Lobby. I came home and painted a board that I had and made it that day.

On the other side of my entryway is one of my favorite pieces that I made over.
It is an old changing table from my first daughter. I’m not the best photographer so you can’t see it, but I sanded it down a little, added a little stain, and added some fun knobs.

The next room I’m going to show you is our toy room, soon to be nursery. There are certain pieces in this room that are a complete steal and so along with showing the room, I will tell you Tip #1 and Tip #2- Use yard sale pages like Craigslist and search through clearance items at stores. You can find awesome pieces on yard sale pages, you just have to look outside the box and act fast! As far as clearance items go, sometimes you have to search through a bunch of stuff, and pick things up because the store just throws it all on the shelf or in the bin. First steal- the tripod floor lamp. These babies can sell from $150- $1000. I found this on craigslist for $15!! Second steal-the fun shag carpet. This was stuffed behind a bunch of rugs and on clearance for $60, opposed to the normal price of $200.

Next up is our piano room. This room in brought to you buy Target’s Threshold line. We all have a love hate relationship with Target right? They get me every time with their cute ottomans and chic mirrors. Sometimes it’s just not in the budget, though, right? This goes along with Tip #2 of searching clearance and also Tip #3-Patience. How many times do you see something in their store, fall in love with it, and think ‘I have to have that right now!’ ? Target is always changing their line up so if you can, be patient and keep your eye on the little red tag that will keep going down in price.

The two yellow ottomans were $17 each, the top Threshold right sunburst mirror was around $15 (normally $50!). The left mirror is a knock-off that I made thanks to Pinterest. The bottom right mirror is also a Threshold mirror that I found at Marshalls for $8 because it has a little crack on the bottom.
Ok, next room is my kitchen/dining area. I never seem to be pleased with this area for some reason, and constantly add/change things in it. We have lived in our home for 4 ½ years and I have painted my dining area 4 times! Yes, I have a problem. First step is admitting it.

This table was a yard sale page find (Tip #1) for $75. I sanded the top down, refinished it, painted the legs and the chairs and then reupholstered them. My chandelier was also a yard sale page find. I painted it white, and tied the crystals on it. The wall art is a Pinterest tutorial. I used some old chargers I had in storage and glued pages on them that I tore out of a book I would never use again.

This next picture is a nook across my table. The frame I found at Michaels, underneath a bunch of stuff, for $4! Inside it holds one of my favorite quotes by President Harold B. Lee ‘The most important work you will ever do will be within the walls of your own home.’

On the opposite side of my dining area is the kitchen. With showing the kitchen, I will give you Tip #5-Decorate using odd numbers and different sizes. If you look through my pictures you will notice I use this tip EVERYWHERE! It is just more pleasing to the eye for some reason.

Above my cabinets you will notice that each grouping has an “up down up” flow to it. Something tall, something short. It just balances out better that way.

Finally, the last room I will show you is my living room. This brings Tip # 4 in to play, finding an alternative to what you want.

Excuse my crazy kids… and let’s talk curtains. I have changed these out four times and was never satisfied. Until now. I could never find curtains long enough to fit my windows. Everything is 95 inches or less in length and those would leave a cheesy gap at the bottom. I needed something about 10 inches longer so I decided to search. The only ones I could find were in a department store for $80-$100 a panel! I needed 5. No way was I going to spend $500 on curtains that were bound to get dirtied by my kids. My alternative- tablecloths. These are white tablecloths from Target. I got 4 of them and cut one in half for my smaller windows. Perfect and bright!
Well, that’s it! I hope you enjoyed touring my home and all the tips that I’ve shared with you. I know it can be hard to find that extra money when you are paying a mortgage, car payments, utility bills, phone bills, grocery bills, and a growing family. The tips I shared are what have helped me to decorate on a budget, without looking cheap, but chic instead and I hope they can help you!!
