Exploring Outdoors...

I am not naturally an outdoorsy person. There is just a part of me that does not look forward to getting outdoors, in the heat and with all those yuck things...like insects and dirt. I know! I know! I am such a big baby. I blame it on my Mom (sorry Mom). She is not a big outdoorsy person and I think it rubbed off on me. When planning fun activities for my kids, I always think of things like museums and library fun....getting outdoors is rarely on my radar. It just isn't something I think of doing for fun. Going outdoors is what I have to do to get from my house to my car (I wasn't lying about not liking to get outdoors! Haha!)

With this new school year, I vowed to plan more outdoor fun for my littles. I would step outside my comfort zone and do something outside....in the sun...where all those insects are...oh and the dirt is too! This past week we ventured outdoors for a fun homeschool group hike. We went to the Historic Railroad Tunnel Trail. Lovelies, I couldn't believe it! I got outdoors and actually enjoyed it!

We ended up hiking about 6 miles, with a stop for a picnic lunch in between. The weather was beautiful, the kids didn't whine, and we all got some energy out of our system.

I think more outdoor adventures are on the horizon for this family.

What do you do to get outdoors and have fun! I am all for fun family ideas!!

XO Danielle

  1. Living in the Phoenix area, I can relate to not wanting to be out in the heat. The problem is, I LOVE the outdoors. I'm excited because it finally starting to cool off a little. Yay!!! We have awesome fall and winter weather. We also have lots of hiking and biking trails. My all time favorite outdoor activity is bike riding. It's cheap, easy to do by myself and sometimes I can get one of the kids to join me. As a family, we enjoy taking the dogs on hikes. The teenager isn't always eager, but sometimes he ends up having a good time and it's good for him. ;-) We also like to kayak. The dogs like it too. My husband and 9 y/o daughter are huge into fishing. I like to go because I get to be outside and it's a bonus if I catch something. They have an urban fishing program here; lakes and ponds in town that are stocked with fish. Maybe you have something similar in the Vegas area. However, I think it's best to get out of town if you can. Always better to get out and explore. I'll admit I enjoy camping. It helps that my husband does all the work. When the kids were younger, we'd take advantage of all the parks and splash pads in the area. We'd also visit the "you pick" farms and orchards. I like gardening, but I'm not very good at it and don't have a lot of room in my suburban dwelling. This would help feed my gardening bug and the kids would have fun. My daughter still talks about the time we picked strawberries and got to ride the tractor. That was over 7 years ago!! We liked the zoo and different animal farms. The kids are older now and we've had to get more creative with outdoor activities. A popular one with the teenager is taking the dirt bike and buggy out on atv trails and doing some gas powered exploring. I grew up in Montana swimming in lakes and creeks, exploring the mountains behind the house, building forts, riding my bike everywhere, outside until dark, taking full advantage of my grandparents garden, raspberry patch and orchard trees. My kids aren't as lucky and don't know what they are missing. It's good to get out though. Get away from the TV, phone, computer, video games, the theater, the mall, shopping, the stress of school and work. I don't have to clean outdoors ... no vacuuming, mopping, no dirty dishes, no laundry, no stacks of papers. All things that make me go Blaaaa! Outside is good, dirty, sweaty fun! Makes me feel like a kid and I can laugh, talk to and enjoy being with my husband and kids. We're not distracted by those other things. Get out! Explore! Enjoy! :-)
