No one escapes suffering in this life. We all go through some pain, sadness, and adversity. God allows us to go through these trials so we can be tested. Our trials make us stronger. We go through them to learn to give our hearts completely to God. He does not put us through hard times, because he enjoys seeing us heartbroken. He does it because He knows that we can handle it. He knows that He is refining us and making us better. A few weeks ago I talked about us being His Greatest Masterpiece. He is the sculptor, molding us into what He knows we can become.
I remember once reading in a Janette Oke novel (I love her Christian Romance books. They are so good!) about how it is up to us to turn our trials into blessings. This has really stuck with me as I go through trials in my own life. Over the years I have learned to give it all to Him, because I know that He knows better than I do. I may not always understand why we have to go through the things we do, but I know that He knows better than I. I see His hand, pulling me through. Over the last year, I can look back and see where the Lord has carried me when I was too weak to stand. He still guides me today. This year has been the hardest of my life. I have been tried and tested to my limits, but God has been blessing me along the way. He has made me stronger and I have been able to grow closer to Him.
President James E. Faust said, “Into every life there come the painful, despairing days of adversity and buffeting. There seems to be a full measure of anguish, sorrow, and often heartbreak for everyone, including those who earnestly seek to do right and be faithful. … For some, the refiner’s fire causes a loss of belief and faith in God, but those with eternal perspective understand that such refining is part of the perfection process” (Ensign, May 1979, 54).
When God is trying us, it is to make us stronger. He is not punishing us. Death, sadness, and strife are a part of life. Without them we would not know happiness and joy. When I get down and out, feeling like I am being pushed to my limits....I think of my Savior.
Jesus Christ was the only perfect person who ever lived on the earth, yet He was scourged, smitten, and suffered all things. When I am feeling that I can do no more, I think of Him. I think that He went through it all, so I could stand beside my Heavenly Father again one day. Whatever you are struggling with at this moment, Christ has felt it. He has been there. He is beside you right now, leading you and wiping your tears.
Because He suffered, we don’t have to be alone in our hard times. He understands the pain everyone goes through and offers peace, healing, and eternal blessings if we endure our trials well. Because of the healing and blessing power of the Atonement, we can see our trials as chances to learn, to grow, and most important to come unto Christ.
If you are struggling, know that God does not ask for perfection, He just asks for us to come unto Him. Do not wait until you have kicked bad habits or overcome your weaknesses. He is ready for you now. He is ready for you to put your faith in Him and love Him.
I pray today we can all seek God's will. I pray that you know you are loved more than anything by your Father in Heaven. He knows your heart. He takes us, imperfect and with all of our baggage. He takes us, with no judgment and loves us. If you cling onto anything this day, cling onto that fact.
You are important, You do matter, and He will bring you through this trial you are going through.
