Don't Get Discouraged....

Keeping on when budgeting gets hard...

Often I receive emails and comments from sweet readers asking me how I deal when things get tough financially. What do I do when money is very tight? How do I not get discouraged? How do I keep on when sometimes all you want to do is give up? How do I deal when financial stress weighs you down? These questions have been on my mind a lot lately, and I recently felt impressed to share my thoughts here on the blog. I want you to know that I know how you feel. Although I may seem like this finance thing is always easy for me, there are times I get discouraged. We all have those moments. There are months when I make our monthly budget and see that once all the money is allocated to various categories and bills are paid, we have very little money left over for some of the "fun" things (going out for family night, hitting up a museum, etc) I'd like to do with the family. I don't think anyone is immune to a bit of financial Eeyore-ness every once in a while. It happens. I however think that it is how we react to these moments that make or break us. We can take the easy way and just throw in the towel, saying this budgeting thing is too hard or we can dust ourselves off and keep trying. Although some months I may not always have that extra money I would like, I know that we are greatly blessed. Our needs are being met and even a few of our wants. We have a home to live in, the bills are paid, we have food to eat, and we are happy....really happy.

Keeping on when budgeting gets hard...

I encourage you to have your own little "count your many blessing" moment when things get rough. Know that you are not alone in whatever you are going through. When I get discouraged, I stop focusing on what I can't do, but what I can. We are a blessed people, but sometimes we can forget how richly blessed we are. We all do it! I know I do. It is when I take the time to recognize all that the Lord has given me, that my Eeyore tune begins to change.

I have learned that giving all of our stresses and grief to the Lord will bless us greatly. He is the only one that can bring peace when life seems a bit chaotic. The Savior is the source of true peace in this world. Elder Quentin L. Cook said that "Even with the trials of life, because of the Savior's Atonement and His grace, righteous living will be rewarded with personal peace".

Keeping on when budgeting gets hard...

Christ has told us "I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ya shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world" (John 16:33) If you are frustrated, if you are discouraged, take it to the Lord. He will grant you peace. If you are feeling stressed, know that you are not alone in this journey Mama. I am cheering you along. You can do this budgeting thing! I know you can!

  1. "Financial Eeyore-ness" is my new favorite phrase. This is such a great post! I often feel like this and have to stop and take things into perspective - even if I am not paying down our debt as fast as I would sometimes like, I try to remember how blessed we are that we can pay all of our bills every month.

  2. Such a wonderful and blessed post.. thank you so much. I think we all ..get into the downs of financial hard time, but with Our wonderful Lord ,we can do all things..
and as you said, I am so thankful that God gives us our needs and sometimes our wants..We are very blessed, to have a roof over our head, and food on the table.[note... when i get down and think..oh I dont want to cook AGAIN... I have to remind myself, that there are people living on the streets---cold and hungry, they would give anything to cook a meal in a warm house!]
Danielle, thank you for sharing and letting people know, its ok to get frustrated and tired.. I love the fact that you are so honest, and let your readers see the hard sides too.thank you.
